Soon Young is a painter based in Korea who primarily works on painting and is also active as an installation art and NFT artist. She studied art in college and graduate school. Since she was young, she has had a deep love and interest in hip-hop music and street art culture. As a result, she practiced street art techniques that were unrelated to her formal classes in school. In 2005, she took to the streets and started spray painting using various techniques, such as stencils. Since then, she has mainly used spray paint and acrylic paint, employing stencils in her artwork.

The world depicted in Soon Young’s work captures the ironic and contradictory situations that we often experience in our lives, presenting them on a single canvas. She explores the individual values and societal norms that may seem timeless but actually change over time, like the notion of “right now, wrong then.” Her art aims to visualize these contradictory situations and meanings by juxtaposing and replacing them on a single canvas.

By examining the meeting of cut-out images and conflicting meanings, Soon Young’s work delves into the meaning of our lives. Although harmony is achieved in her compositions, the lingering afterimages of the missing parts evoke a sense of discomfort or disharmony. Her artwork reflects the experience of living in a world where such discomfort and disharmony occur daily, much like our own lives where we strive to coexist and find harmony despite these challenges.

Soon Young suggests that people who prefer the digital world, such as the realm of social media and internet games, often feel empty and bitter in their hearts, longing to connect with others in person. She believes that living is not an easy task and that each of us writes the history of our lives through our individual hardships. She hopes that her work can provide some solace to those who feel exhausted by the ironic and contradictory nature of modern society.
