Kids Planet, 2018
Suyeong Lee is a South Korean illustrator and graphic artist who is currently based in Montreal, Canada. From a young age, drawing was a significant part of her life, starting from the time she could hold a crayon and continuing through her childhood and teenage years. Her passion for drawing reached new heights through exposure to animation from studios like Disney and Studio Ghibli, and during her teenage years, she experimented with various tools such as watercolor, gouache, and oil pastel.
This led her to the decision to pursue a career that would enable her to connect her passion for drawing with her profession, ultimately leading her to study animation in college. In her early 20s, she shifted her focus to creating graphic art using digital tools such as a tablet and Photoshop brushes.
What sets Suyeong Lee’s illustrations apart is that she incorporates memories from her own life, imagination, and actual photographs to create her artwork. Many of her works are based on photos taken during her travels, which she then transforms into organic illustrations with a fairytale-like color palette and poetic narratives. As a result, each brushstroke becomes a small piece of her personal story, which she weaves together into a unique and dreamy energy that exudes a sense of stability.
Even though she uses digital tools, Suyeong Lee’s artwork has a natural and organic feel, as if it was created by hand. Her delicate attention to detail and pastel color combinations result in striking and surreal artwork. As an artist, Suyeong Lee is always striving to learn and grow as an illustrator and graphic designer. She is grateful for the opportunity to create artwork that brings joy and beauty to others.
