The zodiac is a representation of twelve animals symbolizing the energy and movement of the heavens and earth, originating in ancient Korea and China. My work began with the legend that God organized a race to determine the sequence of the 12 animals, and their order was passed down accordingly.
It is said that the zodiac has been depicted both in human and divine forms. By exploring the fascinating historical narratives of the zodiac, we envisioned a worldview in which the zodiac continues to exist in the present day, convening a meeting on the first day of the first lunar month similar to the past running race. Each zodiac sign is accompanied by a guardian animal, signifying their individuality, and possessing diverse personalities and traits. We interpreted this concept stylishly, producing a short looping video for each figure as they meet their guardian animal.
The creation of each zodiac sign’s shape, modeling, texturing, and the adjustments for the guardian animal were all meticulously crafted by hand, without the use of artificial intelligence technology. The entirety of the zodiac signs can be observed together, and we chose to title the work ‘New’ to convey the idea that we have offered a fresh perspective on the zodiac.
