Mucha's Korean Zodiac Card Collection, 2023
Alphonse Mucha utilized the Korean zodiac as inspiration, resembling tarot cards in his approach. I worked on this project while envisioning how it would come together as a collection of cards. The outcome is what you see now: delicate depictions of the zodiac animals, often portrayed in an oriental style. These images embody the Art Nouveau painting style, primarily focusing on elegantly rendering beautiful women. This style can be reinterpreted to evoke a fresh sensation.
Given the nature of this project as a card collection, a consistent card format was employed for all the zodiac signs. Despite using Midjourney, a generative AI that couldn’t learn the exact model, I faced the challenge of maintaining the coherence of the card format while faithfully capturing Mucha’s exquisite painting style. This task of illustrating the animals was incredibly demanding.
I undertook countless iterations and meticulous adjustments to bring these 12 cards to completion. The process I went through resembled crafting pottery, requiring dedication and refinement. Although the realm of AI art is still in its early stages, I hope that this endeavor can convey its boundless potential to a wide audience.
