요즘 바쁜 정은혜 작가 작업실을 지키는 강아지 지로는 온순하면서도 경계를 멈추지 않는다. 겁이 많아 낯선 이를 보면 어쩔 줄 몰라 하다가도 작가의 품에 안기면 애교 만점인 그는 유기견이었다. 길 위에 갈 길을 잃었던 그를 가족으로 받아들인 건 9년 전 비 오는 길 위에서였다. 사회성보다는 자신만의 세계를 만든 건 세상에 대한 불신과 불안이 우선했기 때문이었다. 태어나기를 특별하게 태어나 주변의 시선에 고립된 생활을 하던 그녀를 오늘날까지 함께 지키는 건 지로였다.
드라마 ‘우리들의 블루스’에서 한지민의 쌍둥이 언니 역할을 완벽하게 소화했던 정은혜. 비주류로 살아가야만 했던 그녀의 숨겨진 존재가 드러나면서 그동안 간과했던 불편한 진실을 되묻고 많은 이들의 가슴을 울렸다.
그녀의 어머니 장차현실은 은혜 씨가 한없이 활발하고 웃음이 많은 아이였다고 했다. 그러나 그녀가 성인이 되면서 정부에서 지원해 주는 시설이 전무한 환경에서 홀로서기를 하게되면서 점차 사회적 활동이 줄어들고 갈 길을 잃은 은혜 씨는 틱과 조현병(schizophrenia)의 증상을 보이기 시작하며 급기야는 환시와 환청까지 오게 되었다. 어릴 적 사진 속 밝은 모습이었던 어린아이의 모습이 어느 순간 분열이 되고 혼돈의 시간을 외롭게 보내야 했다.
그러했던 작가에게 유일하게 타인과 소통을 시작할 수 있었던 매개는 그림이었다. 사진 속 인물들을 그려나가면서 그녀만의 세계를 만들어 가고 있었다. 그림을 그리고 나서부터 조현병 증세가 사라졌고 지금까지 4,000여 점의 인물화를 그리면서 사회의 한 구성원으로서 역할을 해내고 있었다.
미국과 유럽 등 해외에서는 은혜 씨처럼 특별한 정신능력으로 창작성을 인정받고 작품 세계관에 대한 연구와 미술시장이 형성되어 있다. 이를 아웃사이더 아트(Ourtsider Art)라고 부른다.
프로이트 정신분석학으로 인해 무의식에 대한 연구가 활발했던 1900년대 프랑스 화가 장 뒤뷔페가 우연히 정신병원 환자들의 작품에 감명받아 ‘순수하고 정제되지 않은’ 뜻의 아르 브뤼 (Art Brut)를 탄생 시켰고 미국으로 넘어가 많은 연구가들에 의해 ‘아웃사이더 아트’라는 작품군으로 더욱 확장되었다. 미국의 아웃사이더 아트는 정신분석학을 넘어 독학의 개념과 민속 미술을 담고 미국 이주민과 소외계층의 노동자들을 포함시켜 더욱 확산되었다. 따라서 그들은 예술가로서 성장하는 길을 따르기보다 타인으로 인해 재능이 발견되는 일들이 많다.
현대사회에서 ‘아웃사이더’라는 용어는 광범위하게 쓰이고 있다. 하지만 장 뒤뷔페가 ‘순수하고 정제되지 않은’ 예술의 의미는 단순히 독학과 외톨이의 개념이 아니다. 창작자가 무의식과 의식을 넘나드는 정신분열, 환각, 자폐, 아스퍼거 신드롬 등을 특별한 힘으로 봤기 때문이며 이는 일반인이 선택할 수 있는 것이 아니기에 희소성이 있다. 그리고 그들에게 더해진 작품성은 ‘과연 이것을 예술이라고 볼 수 있는가?’에 대한 끊임없는 화두를 던지고 예술의 영역을 넓혀가고 있다.
최근 정은혜 작가의 서울옥션 아모레 성수 전시, 청와대 전시, 한화리조트 설악에서의 특별전, 그리고 ‘은혜 씨의 포옹’ 책 출간 등 활발히 활동을 하고 있는 모습은 많은 이들에게 따뜻함을 주고 놀라운 변화를 일으키고 있다. 작가가 올해 12월에 전시회를 개최할 뉴욕 맨해튼에 위치한 리코/마레스카(Ricco/Maresca) 갤러리는 40년 전통을 자랑하는 초기 뉴욕의 첼시 갤러리 중 하나이다. 프랭크 마레스카(Frank Maresca)가 직접 기획한 지로의 드로잉은 그녀의 작품이 작품으로서 인정받고 뉴욕 아웃사이더 아트 시장에 첫 발을 디딜 한국 아웃사이더 아티스트의 초석으로서의 의미가 있다.
